hiccups as a result of anaestesia

Hiccups can be a side effect of surgery. Some people may develop hiccups as a result of anaesthesia. Several examples of this are: hyperextension of neck - stretching phrenic nerve roots; manipulation of diaphragm or stomach; chest surgery; Laparotomy; Thoracotomy and Craniotomy. The development of hiccups as a result of amaesthesia don’t necessarily last for a long period of time, but an occurrence of hiccups as a result of anaesthesia and that last for days, weeks or even years may be symptomatic of underlying disease. Some after surgery drugs such as: Benzodiazepines; Short-acting barbiturates; and Dexamethasone have been known to induce a bout of hiccups.
